2021 Home Run Derby facts and stats

He finished regulation with 17 homers and easily earned a minute of bonus time with four 475-plus foot clouts. Alonso took care of the remaining dingers in short order, homering on all six of his bonus-time swings to put his second straight Home Run Derby title on ice. Some notable performances in the Derby include Bobby Abreu in 2005, who won the Derby with a then-record 41 homers, including a then-record 24 in the first round. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke the first-round record in 2019 with 29 home runs. He broke that record in the following round, hitting 40 home runs in 2 tiebreakers.

Soto sent most of his drives to center field or even the opposite way, mashing 18 homers in regulation, but he couldn’t quite get in a groove in the one-minute bonus period, adding just four . From 2005 to 2013, a gold ball has been used once a player reaches nine outs (in 2014 when the T-Mobile Ball came into play, six; since 2015, during the final minute). The full field of eight competitors for baseball’s big fly bonanza was a powerhouse group, but only one man could come out on top -- Pete Alonso, for his second straight win. The T-Mobile Home Run Derby returned with a hard-hitting, high-flying, mile-high event. Sammy Sosa still holds the longest estimated homer distance at any Derby with his 524-foot blast at the 2002 edition at Milwaukee’s American Family Field. In terms of total homer distance in a single round, that is the third-highest total in any Derby under Statcast tracking since 2016, trailing only Guerrero and Pederson’s totals from their epic ‘19 semifinal. On July 11, 1988, the day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Cincinnati, TBS televised the annual All-Star Gala from the Cincinnati Zoo. Larry King hosted the broadcast with Craig Sager and Pete Van Wieren handling interviews. The broadcast's big draw would have been the Home Run Derby, which TBS intended on taping during the afternoon, and later airing it in prime time during the Gala coverage.

The first Derby in 1985 featured five from each league, and the 1986 and 1987 events featured three and two players from each league, respectively. In 1996, the field was again expanded to ten players, with five from each league (though in 1997, the AL had six contestants to the NL's four). In 2000, a "match play"-style format was instituted for the second round. The player with the most home runs in the first round faced the player with the least among the four qualifying players, as did the players with the second- and third-most totals.

But for a brief period, the longest LoDo dinger was thought to belong to Trevor Story, who hit a homer in 2018 that was initially estimated at 505 feet before official measurements recalculated it at 487. The likelihood, in percent, that an outfielder will be able to make a catch on an individual batted ball. A year after he beat Stage III colon cancer, Mancini thrilled the crowd, launching 24 homers as the first batter up in the derby. He beat Athletics first baseman Matt Olson and then walked off the hometown hero, Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, with 13 homers to Story's 12.

When the baseballs finally stopped flying, more than 300 dingers had been hit, and Pete Alonso had earned his second consecutive Derby title. After bashing 30-plus home runs in each of the first two rounds on Monday night, Rodriguez looked a little gassed when he hit just 18 homers to start the final -- and it cost him. Nathan notes that a perfectly squared-up ball will be hit at about a 30-degree launch angle off of the barrel with an exit velocity of 100 mph. At those marks, the ball travels about 25 feet farther in Denver than at sea level. Stanton’s Coors Field mark is just one foot shy of the Statcast-Era-long of 505 feet hit by Nomar Mazar at Globe Life Park in 2019.

The only exception was 2005, when Major League Baseball changed the selection criteria so that eight players represented their home countries instead of their respective leagues. The change was believed to be in promotion of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, played in March 2006. In 2006, the selection of four players from each league resumed. In 2011, the format was revised so that team captains selected the individual sides. The field of players selected currently consists of four American League players and four National League players.

Our favorite moments from the 2022 Home Run Derby

At one point, Soto hit just one homer in the span of 13 swings, and while he recovered a bit, he finished regulation with only eight. Still, a 481-foot rocket meant Soto got a full, one-minute bonus period and took advantage with another seven to at least make Alonso work a bit. A favorite coming into the night and a heavy favorite after his seemingly effortless 51 homers across the first two rounds, Alonso remained serene on the staging couch as he watched Trey Mancini put up 22 dingers. That was a daunting target (just one shy of Alonso’s final round record of 23 back in 2019), but the Polar Bear’s first swing -- a 111 mph, 509-foot shot toward the left-field concourse -- erased any sign of nerves. • Alonso set the tone early with a staggering 35 homers in his matchup against Salvador Perez, blowing past the previous first-round record of 29 set by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2019. Those 35 homers marked the third-most put up by a slugger in any round in Derby history, trailing only the epic showdown between Guerrero and Joc Pederson (which required three swing-offs) in the ‘19 semifinals.

That set a new record total for any Derby winner, surpassing the 61 hit by Giancarlo Stanton in 2016. As impressive as 74 homers is, it still falls well shy of the single-Derby record of 91 (!) bopped by Guerrero in a losing effort to Alonso in ‘19. The derby was first nationally televised by ESPN in 1993 on a same-day delayed basis, with the first live telecast in 1998. Although two hours are scheduled in programming listings for the telecast, it has rarely ever been contained to the timeslot and consistently runs three to four hours.

What time is the Home Run Derby?

Looking to become only the fourth player in Derby history to win the event multiple times, the 2019 champion came out firing and set a Derby record for a first round with 35 dingers. He crushed 13 of those before a timeout at about the halfway mark -- at one point homering on nine straight swings. The damage included bombs of 514 and 512 feet that sent fans on the left-field concourse ducking for cover.

The Home Run Derby format was changed significantly in 2014, as MLB sought to speed-up the contest and increase the drama. The Round 2 winner from each league faced the Round 1 winner, and the Round 3 winner crowned the league winner. If the players remain tied, the players engage in a sudden-death swing-off until one player homers. With everyone waiting to watch Shohei Ohtani swing the bat, Soto had the unenviable task of going first in that marquee matchup. With Nationals hitting coach Kevin Long throwing left-handed to the lefty-hitting Soto, he vaporized a pitch that flew 520 feet and broke the all-time Statcast distance record that Story set earlier in the round.
